  Refused routine service of my laptop on the grounds it might be "contaminated". It was a bit dirty from regular use. I directed them to clean it which they refused to do. I sent the unit to the the manufacturer for service.

  Up until recently I had a good opinion of the Geek Squad there but I recently took my computer which had been purchased there and was told that it would cost $200.00 to simply diagnose my computer. I got a friend to fix it for 40.00. They did try a few simple things though but finally said maybe I should junk it. I am certain they are competent but I think a charge of $200 for diagnostics is a bit out of line.
  
  It turned out that my computer had a bent pin in the processor, which was not caused by the Geek Squad, and maybe they would have found it along with the memory being missing and a few other things. Seems like somebody--not them-stripped it and in so doing it got damaged. I put a padlock on my computer. I think they are best for warranty work or if you need somebody to come by, overall Best Buy is a very professional company and my incident might be unique. One could argue that they saved me from a big charge, but some would argue that 50-60 for an hour of labor might be more realistic. I am not sure what their flat rate is or if the $200.00 was just a ballpark, but it sure sounded like a thing I would have to pay.
